Can a guinea pig catch a cold from a human?

Question
QUESTION: Our guinea pig "miss Daisey" also sprays at times, Is that normal?

ANSWER: Hi Shines,
No, a guinea pig can't catch a cold from a human, but they can catch bacterial respiratory infections. If you have a cold, it's best to not hold your guinea pig until you get better. If you do notice your guinea pig is sneezing or caughing or shows any other signs of being sick, take it to the vet.
Is Miss Daisy a male? I have heard that some males do spray, although I've never had any guinea pigs that have done this(male or female). I don't think it's anything to be concerned about, but maybe you could give Miss Daisy's vet a call, just to see what his veterinarian thinks.

QUESTION: Thank you for the help, Miss Daisey is female, I notice the spraying  when my 9yr old son holds her and most of the times he is rough with her and he ends up getting sprayed so we try to limit the amount of time that he hold her because he is always busy and still want to hold Miss Daisey while playing with his toys or his games. Or maybe its just the way she pees that it comes out so fast and straight back instead of down that I'm mistaken for spray.

Answer
Usually a guinea pig will only urinate on a human while being held for two reasons, the first one being that the guinea pig is scared, and the second one because the guinea pig has been out of its cage too long. Is your son gentle with her? If your son is gentle and quiet around her, I would say it is probably just that she's a nervous guinea pig, and she may or may not warm up to some people, it just depends. Make sure to keep the holding-sessions under 10 minutes, so that Daisy can potty in her cage, not on your sons lap.
I'm sure it seemed like a silly question when I asked if Miss Daisy was a female, but I just wanted to have all the information, and yes, I think that it is probably just the way she urinates that looks like she's spraying, and I wouldn't say it's anything to worry about.
