Question
I have a guinea pig that is about 6 months old named S'mores. He hates to be picked up and squeaks in a high-pitched voice whenever I try to hold him. I love guinea pigs,I have never hurt him, and he lives alone in his cage. I've tried almost everything. How can I make him more social?

Answer
Hi Anna,
It sounds like he is in pain, mites was my first thought. The way you described that he squeaked in a high pitch, indicates pain. My guinea pig recently came down with mites, and that is exactly what she did until she was treated. Mites are very, very painful for guinea pigs, and a guinea pig with mites will wheek and squeal in pain when touched. Mange mites can be fatal, so a vet trip and treatment ASAP is very important.
If you can, it'd be best to get him to a vet to be examined today, or as soon as you can schedule an appointment. The vet will be able to tell you if he has mites, or if he has any other problems that would be causing this behavior. Once S'mores is diagnosed, the vet will be able to help you decide the best treatment to cure whatever the problem may be.
If you go to the vet, and it ends up not being mites, you can contact me and I'll be able to help you more with the social issue-if he isn't only acting this way because of the pain of the mites when he is touched.
Let me know how everything goes at the vet, and feel free to contact me if you need anything else or if you have any other questions!
