Question
We have built a big c&c cage have got a mom and babyguinea pig. Baby is now about 5 weeks and mom doesn't seem to want baby in her little sleep house. She sits at the entrence and pokes at baby when she tries to get in..Is this normal? Should baby have her own sleep hut? She seems to really want to be in with mom still... I feel sad for her..

Answer
Yes this is normal. Don't feel sad for the baby. Mom is doing what she's supposed to do, and that's weaning the baby away from her to make her independent. That's how nature intended animals to be. The young must learn to forage for themselves to survive. So she's just being a good mom.

If you have the room you can put another sleep house in the cage. This weaning process will be finished in another couple of weeks. Then you will notice that the two of them will live together happily, but independently, and may even share the sleeping quarters again.
