Baby guineapigs

Question
Hi

I am the proud owner of two new healthy guinea pigs.  Only problem is I am not sure which of my pigs is mummy.  I had two pigs which are only young and I was assured are girls and yesterday I adopted two more senior guinea pigs, which look to be girls also.  The new guinea pigs came from a friend who's dog ate their third guinea pig, that was also female(although probably not).  My question is, should I take the babies out of the cage with the pig that I think is the mother or just leave them all in there together?  I have put in a separate house for mummy and babies in the big cage.  They seem to be getting along and we are in summer so it is not cold.  I have never had babies before so I don't want to hurt them.

Thanks
Libbie

Answer
There's no need to remove the babies from the senior sows if you're sure they are all girls. The mom will wean them by herself.

Sexing senior pigs should be no problem. The boars are quite obviously boys by the time they reach senior weight.

To tell for sure hold them up against your body facing away from you. Gently press down just above the genitals. If there is boar in the midst you will see it right away. The penis will protrude. The testicles of a senior boar are quite obvious as well.

With the sows you can spread the vent open and see the membranes inside. So if you haven't seen any evidence of 'manhood' in either of the senior pigs you most likely have two more girls.

They should all get along easily, just make sure you don't have a boar in there or ALL of the sows, including the babies, will be pregnant.

If you're able to send me a picture I may be able to sex them for you.
