My sick little gerbil

I have two gerbils that are the same age, approximately 1 1/2 years old.  One is very healthy and has never had any problems.  The other has had the occasional (once or twice in her life) fur loss on her nose, but nothing to get her down.  She has recently developed swollen eyes that are sometimes a little crusty.  She also has no fur on her nose, red mucous on her nose and severe lethargy.  She rarely comes out of her nest.  She has plenty of soft bedding in her nest and cage and I have always used the recommended type of bedding, no pine.  What do you think could be getting her down?

Sorry to hear this! Unfortunately it sounds as though your gerbil isn't very well. I can't tell you what it might be as what you have said are general symptons that the gerbil is unwell. The best thing for you to do would be to take it to the vets for a check up. It may just be that a course of antibiotics will clear anything up!! Remember the sooner she is checked the more likely it is treatable!!!
It is probably a good idea to take the other gerbil to the vets also, as certain illnessess are contagious, and could pass on to your other gerbil.
