Gerbils Having TOO Many Babies and Eating Them

Question
Hello, my little sister got 2 gerbils for her birthday months ago. They were suppose to be male and male or female and female (cant remember) but the petstore gave us male and female. They had babies and we now have 7 full grown gerbils. They have been having more and more babies the past week though. They are eating some every night and having more every few nights so far. Someone told me I have to seperate the males from females but we cant tell whats what. We are just going to try and give them to a petstore or something. What do you think we should do?

Answer
I would certainly seperate the males from the females. Gerbils can be pregnant and nurse at the same time. It's normal for gerbuks to eat their young. They are cannibals and so they will eat their young.
