Question
I have a dwarf siberian hamster.  it is bleeding from under the tail.  I don't have alot of money right now and can't afford to take it to the vet.  what should I do?  Is this a menstrual period?

Answer
Hi Marsha

Hamsters don't have periods as such.  Any blood really ought to be investigated.  She could have some sort of infection that is causing the bleed.  Keep the area clean and monitor it.  If it is a 'one off' then it might be nothing, but if it continues or gets worse then you do need to get veterinary advice. How is she in herself?  Is she behaving normally, or is she quiet, hunched?  If she is quiet, hunched etc. clearly looking ill, then she is in pain, and again I appreciate the cost involved but she does need to see a vet.  You could perhaps phone the vet first and discuss the problem to check that they have a knowledge of hamsters - and agree a fee if necessary.  I have found vets who will put the health of the animal first before the cost of treatment - and perhaps you can get a reduction in price.

Good luck with this.
