Question
I have a female ferret I think she might be pregnant how do I find out?

Answer
Hi Spring:

My first question to you would be 'why do you think she is pregnant?'   Is it something about her physically that has changed?   Also, how old is your ferret and how long have you had her?

Ferrets that most people get in the U.S. come from pet stores and arrive spayed and descented, so if this ferret came from a pet store, it would not be possible to be pregnant.  It is very very unusual that a ferret that comes from a breeder would end up with anyone other than another breeder. So, unless you purchased this ferret from a private party and it has been with a male ferret who is in rut (ready to breed), the chances of her being pregnant are nearly zero.

There are, however, diseases that can cause a female ferret's vulva to swell up and look puffy. So, if that is the symptom you are seeing, your ferret needs to see a vet. If you think the ferret IS pregnant, you should also get her to a vet as soon as possible, so the answer either way is - get the ferret to a vet as soon as possible.

I'm not sure that gave you any definite answer, but you really can't get a definite answer without a thorough "hands-on" examination by an experienced ferret vet.

If you are not sure if there is a qualified "exotics vet" in your area, please write again and give me your address and zip code so I can try to locate a vet for you. I think it is very very important that you get this ferret to a proper vet as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Jacquie Rodgers
