mixing ferrets

Question
It is a fait accompli! I have one female ferret two years old. She has not interacted with other ferrets during this period. Recently I purchased a baby male. Can you give me any advice on safely introducing the two? The baby is eager to interact, it appears, having just come from the pet shop where he was kept with other ferrets. It is the older ferret that is my concern. She does some understandable "upset" at the addition of the baby. Please note that I have each ferret in the same room, but in separate cages. Again, may I request advice on this matter?

Answer
The current belief in introducing ferrets is to "just do it"!  Keeping them in the same room where they can smell each other can just heighten the intensity of the meeting process as does the previously encouraged introduction of mixing cages and bedding.  Ferrets are tough and usually adjust to a new member of the family.  Do not concern yourself over noises, neck biting, or other flighting like behaviors.  This is normal and why ferrets have such think skin on their necks!
