Question
Dear expert,
I have brought home a 40 day old female dachshund puppy. when ever I am home, it jumps and chews my legs. I am afraid that it may strain its back bone.

By what age I should start training it to sit, walk on leash and to discipline it.
Regards and thanks

Answer
I would start now doing some fun and positive training like sitting and walking with you. As soon as she has had a couple of sets of vaccinations you can start a puppy kindergarten class. Is the puppy really this young? Most pups don't go to their new home until at least around 60 days (8 weeks), 7 weeks bare minimum. Sometimes puppies who leave their mom and littermates early miss out on important social skills. As soon as she is vaccinated, I'd be looking for playmates to help in this area, as well as a good trainer to help with such matters as learning good bite inhibition (usually taught by the mother dog. A good trainer should be able to help you put an end to the jumping up (turn away, ignore for jumping, reward for four feet on the floor)Also, if she learns sit, she can't be sitting and jumping up at the same time. Puppies jump on us because they want attention, and because we are "way up there". It may also help if you get down on her level to interact. But do not reward the actual jumping up with attention (even the negative attention of trying to push her away) Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
