Answer
Hello Nadine,

Hmm, is it a dominance problem or does he just need more training? Heck, if I know.-:) It could be either or both.

The best way to find out is by trying some things. First, you should stop calling him. If he's not coming and you can't enforce it, you're only teaching him he doesn't have to come.
Second, see how he responds to the "down" command. Does he drop like a rock or does he only do it when he feels like it?
Does he pull on the lead when you walk him?

If he's reluctant to do "down" and he pulls on the lead, then you probably have a leadership problem. If he responds well to down on command and walks at your side like a little gentleman, then you probably have a training problem.

If the problem is leadership then I'd suggest you read my article "Training Tips" which can be found at http://www.perfectdogtraining.com If the problem is training the recall, I'd suggest you read what I and the other dog training experts have previously written on this forum about training the recall.

Finally, don't ever give a command you can't or won't enforce. You are always teaching your dog whether you realize it or not. I doubt you want to teach him that obeying you is optional.

Good Luck!

Sandy
