Question

Brutis
I have a 6 month old german shepherd/lab/rottweiler mix, we got him when he was nine weeks old. He is a very good dog and learnt to go outside to use the potty. He goes to the door to let us know he needs to go out, we open the door he goes out and hits the door when he wants back in. But the problem we are having is we work night shift and can be gone for 9-12 hours and he will use the bathroom in the same spot in the spare bedroom, while we are at work I dont so much have the problem with it.  Its the fact he will do it if we have went out for the evening or even if we are home he will go the spare room do his business and come find us to let us know he did something wrong, typically we just clean it up with out yelling or scolding him, but I am growing tired of cleaning up poop and my house smelling awful. I know your first answer will be to shut the spare room door, but i also have a cat and his litter box is in there and thats the only convienate place to keep it. I just dont know what to do, we tried using a kennel but he used the bathroom in it and didnt seem to mind, it was more hassel then it was worth we had to clean the kennel and bath him everytime we got home from work. Can you please help me.

Answer
You are right, Sasha, my first suggestion would have been to keep the bedroom door closed. A baby gate is one way of keeping the dog out but not the cat, because the cat will just hop right over the gate. You might even consider installing a cat door in the spare bedroom door so that you can keep it closed while still allowing the cat access.

Secondly, you need to thoroughly clean the floor in the spare bedroom with an enzymatic cleaner, like Nature's Miracle, to eliminate all traces of the odor where Brutis has pottied in there.

Thirdly, a 6 month old puppy cannot be expected to 'hold it' for 9-12 hours. As stated on my housetraining web page (http://housetraining.angelfire.com), puppies can go for about as many hours as their age in months, so he should be given an opportunity to go to the bathroom at least once every 5 or 6 hours. If you cannot do this, then you are just going to have to suck it up and deal with cleaning up messes, arrange for someone to come and let him out, or train him to use a litter box of sorts.

I would suggest that, since you said he pottied in his crate when you tried crating him, you use the X-pen method, as explained on the housetraining web page.
