Running with a beagle

Question
I am a runner. I usually run 5 to 6 miles a day. There are days when I run less and days when I run more. I usually run early in the morning.

I would like to have a reliable running partner. I thought my 1 year and 8 months old Beagle would be a good running partner.

Another reason I would like my beagle to run with me is because other than when I run, I am not home very much. I work a lot. So, she does not get walked very much. My wife is home in the evenings; however she does not walk her very consistently. She only walk her every once in a great while.

Would I be harming my dog if I took her running each morning before I feed her? I heard that it is good to "work" your dog before you give them food.

Of course I would start her out slow, maybe a mile or two to start and gradually increase the distance.

I am a little uncertain about taking my dog running because she is not a big dog. But, they are a hunter by nature and they have to run to catch their prey. So, my reasoning is that if they run to catch a prey, why can't run 5 or 6 miles as exercise.

Please let me know if running with my Beagle would be ok.

Thanks,

Answer
Charlie,
Your question was sent to the question pool, so I thought I would take a stab at answering your question.   If you start your dog off slowly, I don't see why she wouldn't be to run with you.

I would definitely have her checked over by a vet first to be sure she is in good physical condition.  Solid build/good heart.  Also, a vet would probably be the best person to get advice from regarding the run.    I would be sure to check her paws several times during your run to be sure they are getting too tender.   Lots of water breaks but be sure she doesn't drink too much. and never take her on days that are hot.

Remember that dogs don't sweet like we do and can very easily over heat.

You will just have to use common sense and be sure not to over due it.    And always keep her on a leash so she doesn't run in the opposite direction.
