7 yr old Samoed seriously regressing in toilet training

Question

My wife and "Kid"
7 yr old male samoed...well toilet trained but moved to new house and has since regressed. Although he never pees inside during the evenings he spends inside with us, he just refuses to use the allocated space i have created for him in the pool area. He spends a significant part of the day in the pool area and urinates and poos all over the place EXCEPT where he should. In the previous house, where he has lived for the first 7 years of his life, he had the same conditions but used a specific area as a bathroom. This was covered with a 3X6 foot piece of marine plywood. I therefore tried to recreate the same conditions but to no avail. I also have another problem. The dog also refuses to sleep in his kennel. He much rather prefers to sleep on the floor, regardless if it is a hot night or a cold raining night. I am concerned as our climate is extremely humid and although we never have temperatures plummeting less then 5 centigrade, the floor can get very cold and musty.

Many thanks in advance

Answer
First have this dog checked out by a veterinarian to make sure there isn't an underlying cuase and get a clean bill of health. Once you have that in hand, you may want to recondition him to the new location so he understands where the bathroom is and more importantly, where it is not. You may want to retrain him by taking him out on the leash and standing until he goes to the bathroom in your designated space and then reward him. Often that is all it takes on the older dogs once they understand the new routine.

If you are not too bothered by where he sleeps, I wouldn't sweat the floor as a resting location. For him, there may be some comfort in how the floor feels and there may be some visual that he likes having from that vantage point. Have you tried moving the kennel to the area he prefers to sleep in?

There is some excellent information on this at my web site:
