Question

collie-shepherd pups
We have had two rescued sibling collie-shepherd mix puppies for 3 1/2 months now that are now 5 1/2 mos. old and they arent fixed.they go potty every 4 hours except when i am in bed.they are only crated when i am in bed or while we arent home or if they are badly fighting with our terrier-chihuahua  mix dog.I have been using old sheets to let them pee on in their cage because when they first came here they were peeing in their cage but our washer has broke down and the sheets are really stinking up the house and making the dogs ill.i thought about using dog training puppy pee pads in their bed, because we use in our living room,in between potty trips, outside(they dont always go potty on their 10-20min.walks)because they dont let me know when they need to go out.I am afraid if i leave no sheet in their bed they will pee on the cage tray.it seems they will use anything they can get ahold of to pee on.their stuffed toys, paper, etc.I wouldnt mind having them crate free someday because they may have to be as they are inseparable and are going to be big dogs.i have tried separating them many times and they cry for each other.we have cats too so leaving them to roam with cats and the small dog is out of the question.so what can we do with these issues? Its me and my boyfriend but its up2me mostly to care for the pets.thanks in advance4help.

Answer
Potty training routines begin with a first AM, then every two hours, then just before bed time, plus immediately before and after eating. The dogs go out on lead and when the dog goes, you immediately give it a tiny reward. It is taught to go where you want it to go and not just a walk around the block for random sites.

Unless you like lots of bleach and odo-ban or nature's miracle, the sheets are only attracting the dog to pee on them. Even after washing, scent remains that the dog can sense. Get the dogs out of the crate and outside to pee/poop.

I have several house dogs with 11 house cats. There is no reason the dogs and cats can't be together, just put up a barrier 9baby gate) so teh dogs can't get to the cats food or litter pan. Make sure the litter pan is cleaned twice daily to eliminate the scent. Many dogs like to eat cat poop.

Likewise, pee pads are really only for circumstances where you can't walk the dog, apartments and other places where the owner can'g be around to potty the dog as often as necessary.

Even adult dogs need to go several times a day.
