Dog tackling

Question

My dog
I would like to know a technique or a training method for my dog who tackles other dogs. NOT ALL OTHER DOGS. I have a 14mo old german shepherd/husky/pit bull mix. I have had him since he was 9mo. In order to keep up w/ his high energy level I walk him and take him to the dog park. While on walks he does not care about a dog in a yard or chained up outside or even walking on the sidewalk across the street. We have passed dogs on our walks and he pays them no mind just keeps on sniffing. The dog park is a different story. Sometimes we arrive and he runs around chasing and being chased. I have noticed that he likes to tackle other dogs. Some dogs are ok w/ this and they wrestle around. Other dogs do not like this and my dog does not read the signs and keeps on tackling them. When i feel this is out of control i grab his collar and start running to the other side of the dog park. usually that is the end of that. other times he will watch the other dog and randomly run other and tackle them again. the other thing that worries me is sometimes he doesnt back off even through yelping. again he does not do this with every dog and it is not all unneutered males, my dog is neutered and does play w/ other unneutered males. He has never broken the skin of another dog. i would like to know what i can do and steps i can take to control or prevent this behavior before it gets out of hand. Thank you.

Answer
Your dog has some really interesting breeds -- all of which are high drive and intelligent.

What you may want to do is train your dog to come to you from various distances and with a variety of distractions. This may be best accomplished with the assistance of a trainer that will go with you to your local park.

The goal I would give you for right now is getting excellent control over your dog no matter what the distance is between you.
