Pomeranian leash training.

Question
Dear Anne,
i have recently bought a Pomeranian puppy named Zoey. She is about 4 months old. I just started to try to leash train her, and let me tell you, she does not like it at all!  She wears a hares, and once you put the leash on her she will just turn her head around and try to bite and chew on the leash. Usually she is pretty successful about getting the leash in her mouth. Once she does she will not let go of it. If i try to pull her to walk with me, she will just roll over on her back and chew on the leash in her mouth.
What is the most efficient way to leash train my puppy?
Should i just keep taking her out on the leash everyday hoping she will get used to it eventually?

Answer
Hi Morgan,
Lots of times, this behavior is the result of the puppy having lots of energy.  One thing you can try is a little preventive strategy.  Try taking puppy to a safely secure area and play with her for a while.  You can use a tennis ball, a tug, etc.  One she's a bit tired, it should be less likely for her to grab the leash.  You can also walk her using a chain leash for a while, till the chewing stage is over.  Most puppies don't like the clinking on their teeth, or the taste of the metal, and will leave it alone.
When you get ready to train, you may want to consider clicker training.  There are some great training videos on "kikopup" channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFgtqgiAKoQ
