Potty Bell

Question
Our puppy is a lab/border collie mix.  She is about 4 months old and
we've had her for about 3 weeks.  We have been training her to ring a
bell when she needs to go out. She caught on very quickly (after two days)
but now she rings the bell constantly just to go outside.  How do we
teach her only to ring the bell when she needs to eliminate?  I've
started putting the bell out only at her "scheduled" potty times... after
eating, napping, and playing.  Sometimes she will go out and squat but
will not actually do her business and then looks pleased that she was
able to get out.  Any suggestions would be great!

Answer
Hi Beth!
It sounds to me like your dog just genuinely wants to spend more time outside. Take her outside for more walks and allow her plenty of time to play outside AFTER she has used the restroom. Some dogs learn to put off going to the restroom when they are outside because they know their owner will take them inside as soon as they get done going.
I think only putting the bell down during scheduled potty times seems like the best option for now. Good Luck!
