Question
How do I obtain the same results to outside commands as I do to inside commands?

My Min Schnauzer is 6 yrs old, previously owned by an elderly lady who provided little or no discipline/training.  I have had the dog for 4 months and he has responded favorably to training commands such as come, sit, stay,downstairs/upstairs, outside/inside, lay down.  He now follows a lead quite well but still strains and wants to lead.

I have virtually no control of the dog if he is outside and not on the lead.  If I am not careful and command him to stay when opening the door, he will bolt and run outside and not respond to any command.

Answer
The steps to moving outside need to be more gradual.  Start on lead in a quiet area, using the same techniques that allowed for reliability in the house.  As your dog becomes reliable on lead, use a training lead, long line or clothesline to work at some distance and still maintain control.  As you change locations and work on lead, that reliability will transfer to off lead.
