Question
backyard
backyard
I have 2 medium mutts that are both boys, 3 years old, and neutered. My dogs are outside dogs and i have a well sized backyard. I have a grassy area and a upper hill that serves as a large planter for trees and such.
The dogs both go to the bathroom in the grassy area, but i would like them to go in the planter so i dont have to pick it up. They do occasionally go to the bathroom in the planter and whenever i do see them i praise them. They are not the most intelligent dogs and i dont think they understand that i want them to do that.Im not at my house most of the day and i cant see the whole backyard from the sliding door so i cant supervise them all day. I didnt teach them when they were puppies so they are already used to going in the grassy area.It would be helpful if they could use the planter as a bathroom. please help me. thank  you.

Answer
Hi Marie.  You'll have a challenge with this because both dogs are outside all the time and you can't be there to constantly monitor them.  When they eliminate in the grassy area, pick up the pile and put it in the planter area.  Keep the grassy area free of all piles.  Keep at least one pile in the planter area while you are trying to retrain an elimination area.  I'm not certain this is possible to do after 3 years, but you can give it a try.  Keep in mind that once an area gets too polluted with poop, the dogs will look for a new area to use, so you'll have to do pick up in the planter area at some point. Good luck.
