Question

This is Trevor
I'm a twin and I am a boy. My sister and I are 12 years old. My mom leaves all the training to me and my sister so buying anything really expensive is out of the question, my mom will take him to the vet if necessary and buys him basic stuff.(Food, wee pads, etc.) We have a crate for our 8 month old chihuahua and we decided not to get him neutered. He is a male chihuahua and his name is Trevor he is very quiet(Usually). Each day my mom,me and my sister leave the house at 7 a.m. to go to school and work. We have a maid that helps with the housework and takes care of my grandma but one day my mom stayed at home and found out that everyday, the maid locked Trevor in his crate right after we left and let him out right before me and my sister came back.(2:09) My mom comes home around 9 or 10 P.M. Once we tried giving Trevor the run of the house but that didn't work as well as we thought, he left accidents everywhere. So we confined him to a little play pen area that is about 5 feet by 2 feet. We keep his bed and crate in one corner and his pee pee pad in the opposite side. The pee pad takes up a lot of the area so we're trying to teach him how to pee outside. We walk him everyday about 5 times and sometimes he just holds it in. When we put him back in his area he just goes straight to the pee pad when we're not looking and does his business. We really need help on how to stop this because our mom is getting annoyed and is saying that she won't buy any more pee pee pads because it is costing too much. Also it's starting to get annoying that we're going out for no reason. This week is spring break so this is our chance to finally train him! Sometimes he starts peeing then stops after about a second. He's poohed outside 2 times but he's still not getting the idea. Please help!

Answer
Hi George.  I'm really impressed that you've decided to take responsibility for housetraining Trevor.  He is just adorable.  Housetraining small dogs can be a challenge, so have patience.  You may be able to make some headway in a week.  It sounds like you're on the right path, just need some more guidance.

I love your play pen area set-up.  It's perfect for housetraining.  The problem is that Trevor has developed a preference for doing his business on the wee pad instead of outside.  What you need to do is take a soiled pad outside to the area that you'd like him to use.  The next time he wakes from a nap or overnight, carry him directly outside to the pad in the yard.  Put him on leash and stand right there until he eliminates.  If he doesn't do his business, he must go back in the crate - no access to the wee pad indoors.

After you've had a couple of successes outside on the pad, remove the ones in his pen area.  You'll want to clean the floor really well where the wee pads used to be.  You'll need an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle that will get the smell out of the floor.

I would say that after a couple days of taking him outside to use the wee pad successfully, you can start to make it smaller - fold it in half so that he has less of a target.  You'll keep making it smaller until he's going more on the grass than on the pad.

Be sure to give him a small food reward after he successfully eliminates outside.  Control his food intake by only feeding twice a day and picking up what he doesn't eat after 10 minutes.  That will help you predict his bowel movements.

Management is the key to successful housetraining.  No freedom in the house unless he's done all his business outside.  When you take him outside on leash, be sure you stand still in the place you want him to go.  You can take him for a walk afterwards if he enjoys that.

You really need to get Trevor neutered.  When you describe him "peeing then stops after about a second" - that's marking.  That's what male dogs do to define their territory.  If you get him neutered soon, you may be able to stop this behavior.

During the housetraining process, you might also consider getting him a belly band that will prevent him from urinating on the floor.  You can google these to find out more about them.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  I'd love to hear back from you in a couple of days with a progress report.  I can give you more pointers if you get stuck on something.

Good luck and enjoy your spring break.
