Question
QUESTION: I have an adorable 4 mo old male chihuahua, I am very consistant at taking him outside to potty.  He usually does but will still come in and hike his leg and potty on the furniture.  Is there a way to stop this?

He has not been nutered, we have a 3 year old female chihuahua and hope to be able to breed them in the future.

ANSWER: Hi Sharon,
I'm not trying to insult you, and mean this only in the most helpful way, but, frankly, you are not prepared, at least yet, to be a breeder.  Firstly, you don't understand how to house train a pup, or you would not have asked your question in the first place, nor do you understand urine-marking behavior.  Of course there is a way to stop this - house train and neuter your dog.  Unfortunately, some male dogs, even after being neutered, continue to mark.
Now, as to the housetraining issue.  You need more knowledge than a paragraph here, since puppy buyers will want you to at least have started to train their dogs before they leave your home.  So, you need more knowledge than the average pet owner, not less.
This is a start:

And, before you breed these dogs (which you should not do unless and until you title them) read on here: http://www.wonderpuppy.net/1breeding.php#breeding
The world does not need more puppies just because they are cute and would make great pets - the world needs more responsible breeding practices!!!!!!!! If you don't know how much it costs to save a breeding bitch that gets into trouble and needs vet help, or if you don't know which diseases are common to Chi's, or if you don't realize that to be a responsible breeder you should have homes for your pups before the breeding ever takes place (and be willing to be responsible for every pup you breed for its lifetime if the owner can no longer care for it), and if you are unaware that "show" breeders sell their "pet" pups for less than most backyard breeders, and if you don't know that most breeders make NO profit, then you aren't ready.
If you are serious about becoming a breeder, join the nearest Chihuahua Breed Club, or the National Club, and get a mentor.  Go to the shows and meet others who favor your breed, and attend a Pat Hastings structure seminar or get her video "The Puppy Puzzle".

QUESTION: You did not offend or insult me in the least.  I guess I could of been more specific.  I do not intend on being a breeder.  I could never "sell" a puppy.  We have thought of breeding my pair once only.  I have several family members that would love to have one of their pups and would make very good owners and I could still see them on a regular basis.

I agree with you on the pet population and on irresponsible owners. We also have a pair of boxers, and never intended to breed them, they have both been altered.

I will check out the information you gave me on my male marking and try to understand it more so I can work on it with my little one.

Thank you for your reply.

Answer
Hi Sharon,
I'm sure that you are thinking of it with the best intentions, and it's good that you would have homes for the pups, but have you considered how dangerous it is for Chi's giving birth?  Many Chi females end up having Cesarian births and only 65% of the pups are born alive. You need to know how large the male's and females parents were, because if they were too large, there's still a chance your female will have problems, even if the mate you choose for her is appropriately sized.  This isn't for the fainthearted.  You could easily lose your bitch to complications.
Talk to a long time Chi breeder through AKC breeder referral before you do this.
