Newly adopted dog having accidents

Question
We adopted a 2yr old golden retreiver, 3 days ago. I just found a pile of poo in the basement! We let him out very frequently, so I don't understand why he isn't eliminating outside. I have seen him urinate outdoors, but no poo. This is my first dog so I don't know if this is because he's nervous in his new home or if I need to tackle this with full time training!

Answer
Hi Colleen,
Sometimes dogs do have regression in their house-training skills when they are faced with a big change, such as a move, or a new family.  Don't give the dog any freedom in the house - crate him when you can't watch him, go out with him (don't just send him outdoors), and remember to praise him or offer a tidbit after he "goes" outside the first few times - then offer the treat or praise only occasionally.  Do NOT scold him for accidents (they're your fault for not supervising him LOL) because he may get the idea that it's scary to eliminate in front of you, thus he will try to hide and do it.  Good luck.
