Hello, how are you? I have a 2 year old Chihuahua named twinkles, and a 3 year old Chihuahua named luna, and 2 1 year old cats named star and sky. My dog twinkles has to be caged up when I'm not home or I'm sleeping due to the fact that i cant get her to stop eat all of the other animals poop. she eats her own while shes in the cage also. i have tried hot sauce like one vet told me too. i have tried meat tenderizer. i have tried something called forbid. nothing seems to work. can you please help me i don't want to have to give her away because of this problem. thank you so much:)
AnswerWhile it bothers humans, poop-eating is not abhorrent to dogs. I suspect your dog may possibly have come originally from a puppy mill. There, the puppies have to remain in small spaces with their mothers, and the moms will eat poop to keep the area clean for the puppies. The bad news is that she is forced to do it within sight of the pups and some of them learn to eat poop, too. You can also try a product made by Solid Gold called S.E.P. Also, try feeding her a higher quality diet. If you buy it at the grocery store or at the vet office, you may want to go elsewhere - some of those foods have fillers, such as grain and other things, that are not digested well and can cause some dogs to seek nutrients in previously digested food (poop).
