Destructive Dogs

Question
Dear Sandy,

I have 2 American Eskimo Spitz who are about to turn 2 years old. I got them when they were puppies and I first thought the destructive behavior was kind of because they were puppies and that the chewing problem was because of their teeth. The behavior has continued though. We had to redo our backporch last summer because they had chewed on everyone of the rails, but now they are starting to chew them again. It is not just the chewing that's the issue they have dug up all the plants in the back yard and there are a bunch of holes out there. We have tried sprays, pepper, and other kinds of stuff and none of it works. Is there anything you would suggest the help with the destructive behavior.

Answer
Hello Ashley,

It appears you are trying to treat the symptoms rather than the problem.

Generally the behaviors your dogs are engaging in are caused by stress. The breed you have are highly intelligent dogs that require mental stimulation and exercise. Being isolated in a yard would not give them the outlets they require for their energy. It appears they have created their own outlets which involves chewing and digging.

To change this behavior you need to stimulate their minds through obedience training and give their bodies challenge through exercise.
I'd suggest you begin by giving your dogs a good long walk at a heel, everyday.

This should solve your problem.

Good Luck!

Sandy
