Too Scared to go outside

Question
I have a doxiepoo who is about 4 years old and very scared of everything. We just moved into a house with a backyard that we thought our dogs would love. But our doxiepoo will not go outside when its time to go. When we try to get him to go and walk over to him he pees. We use to live in an apartment complex with an open grassy common area and he if he wasn't on a leash he would run all over the place so we thought he would love having a backyard. But not only will he not go out but when we do get him outside he sits at the door and shakes and drools everywhere. What is wrong and what can we do to fix the problem?

Answer
There are a few different variables to this.  How is the weather in your area?  If very cold/uncomfortable he may not be able to overcome the desire to stay in paired with unfamiliar territory.  At the apt., he knew what was out there so going out in cold weather was offset by knowing he got to run around.  If there are any wild animals, even just raccoons or possums, he may be afraid of the unknown.

Make out side fun-do not try to coax or plead with him to go out.  Hook the leash on, and start walking-as if he has been doing fine all along.  Your body language will tell him a lot.  If he locks up, pick him up with no verbal encouragement and set him outside-THEN praise.  You can also have special toys outside such as Kongs filled with treats/food or edible bones that he doesn't get in the house.

If his condition doesn't improve, I would recommend finding a behaviorist in your area.  However I do not use drugs in my training/behavior modification-so that is NOT something I recommend.
