Question
Hi,

I have a six month old Jack Russel Puppu who tends to pee from excitement when she meets new people. A helper from the web site told me to get people to ignore her when she pees. With strangers and young children who are excited to pet her, that is hard to explain. Should I just keep her away from people till she gets older? Or do I literally have to say "Ignore her for a minute.. then you can pet her."

Answer
It's fine to tell people to ignore her for a moment and then be quiet as they pat her.  You can also suggest that they kneel, turn their bodies to the side and not make direct eye contact, which a submissive dog might find threatening.  It's your duty to protect her, but you don't have to limit her contact with people and dogs, in fact that isn't desirable at all.  But, you do have to be a bit proactive in telling folks how you would like them to interact with her.  The good news is that most pups grow out of the submissive urination if you follow that rule:-))
