Shih tzu toilet training

Question

Shih Tzu Chihuahua
We have a Shihtzu/Chihuahua cross and a Poodle/Chihuahua. The poodle was toilet trained in a few weeks, the shihtzu is still not there after a year. She is worst at night. She does relieve herself in our bathroom onto newspaper. We let her sleep on the end of our bed so that we would wake up when she jumped off to go to the bathroom, and we would take her outside throughout the night. However she is so quiet we now seem to sleep through and she does a full release just before WE wake up in the morning. We have always taken both dogs outside first thing in the morning, but by this time she has already relieved herself.

We have also noticed that for a week after being at the kennels, OR if we are at other people's houses, she can and does hold on throughout the night.

How can we break this nightly and early morning habit of hers, especially if we don't wake up?

Answer
Hi beverly:

Have you tried Create training?

It would seem as if this is now a pattern/habit, that may be left over from puppyhood.

I would go back to basics with create training.

Also remove the newspaper from the bathroom, if the standard toilet protocols are still in place the dog will continue to use them as it knows they are there and what they are for.
