Question

Stella and Scarlett
I have 2 minature dachshunds that are housedogs. The 2 Dachshunds, who are actually sisters but are 6 months apart in age, have started having serious fights with each other. This came out of the blue they just latched on to each others neck and wouldn't let go. One is 2 years old and the other is 1 year old and they are both spayed. Any ideas what could be causing this and how it could be resolved? They are having to be seperated because anytime they get near each other they try to attack the other one.

Answer
It sounds to me as if they are trying to re-establish the heirarchy in the household. As one dog enters adulthood this is pretty common. Also if there are any new additions or if anyone has recently left the household it could trigger this sort of behavior as well. The best thing that you can do is establish yourself firmly as the pack leader and let them sort the rest out themselves. For little dogs, dachshunds are very dominant, stubborn and bossy. So, chances are, each one of your girls is firmly of the opinion that she is in the right in whatever their disagreement is. I suggest you allow them to fight it out provided nobody is cornered and unable to escape. If this happens, make a loud noise, stomp your feet or shout HEY! To distract them and then separate them once they've paused to see what you're on about. Don't punish them or one or both of them may start to associate the punishment with the other and that will only make matters worse. As long as you are firmly established as pack leader, fighting over the bottom two spots won't be that serious.
