Question
I have a 9 monyh male border collie I know they need physical and mental exercise,I raised all my other dogs(not border collie)in NY where they could run all day in a large fenced yard. Now I live in NV. it is hot almost all day and my border collie will only play in the shade I bought a brand new awning, artifical geass for him to be outside but still we can only  play outside limited time We can play inside in the air conditioning which I do not mid PROBLEMS  I do not know any other games besides basic ball catching, frisbee that will keep him exercised Are there any games or toys to get for a border collie to exwercise sometimes by himself?   If there are any other border collie owners out there that can help I would appreciate it.ALSO he chewsa and bites off the hair on the tip of his tail (it is not anything to do with his anal glands)

Answer
Wait until it's cooled off some in the evenings, or get up earlier in the mornings and take him for a nice long walk for at least half an hour. Fetch is a fine game to play if your dog enjoys it. You can also play hide & seek games with him, where you either hide his toys and then tell him to go find them, or you hide yourself and then call him and let him find you. Almost every dog loves this game! Lastly, basic obedience training is an excellent way to not only bond with your dog, but also tire out his mind.

Does he chase his tail and bite it, or just chew on the end? Is there any particular time that he does it? It could be an outlet for excess energy. Do you give him appropriate toys to chew on, like Nylabones or Kong toys?
