Adopted Dog Secretly Peeing in the house

Question
We adopted a hound mix about four months ago. She's a spayed 3yo. We also have a 5yo papillon Eskimo mix that we've had since he was three months old.  When we brought the hound home, we had little to no trouble getting her acclimated. Within the last couple of weeks we have found out that she is peeing in the house. We will always find it a long while after she's done it as she will sneak into another part of the house and sneak back without us even noticing. She will also only do it on carpet. We have hardwood downstairs so show will do it on the few rugs we have or sneak upstairs to do it and we won't know until we step in it. Our older dog had a bad experience being crated so he has full rein of the house when we aren't home and. Have never had a problem with him. With her, she was treated quite severely prior to our adoption and nearly chewed through her paws from nervousness while in the pound so I'm very afraid to crate her.

Answer
Lindsay, close the doors to the rooms that she's wetting in, or gate off her access to them.  Don't allow her to continue to urinate on the carpet.  Clean them with an enzymatic solution and keep her out of the rooms until she has a way to tell you she has to go outside and is doing so consistently.  Keep her in the room with you so you can monitor her.  If she leaves the area, follow her and if you find her sniffing the ground, interrupt and take her outside.  Go out with her to be sure she eliminates.

You don't have to use a crate to confine her.  An exercise pen or a baby gate can keep her contained and safe.  She should not have free range of the house until she's been without an accident for 3 weeks.

Does she know how to tell you she has to eliminate?  Many dogs will bark or whine, but if she doesn't, you'll have to teach her to tell you somehow.  Ringing a bell hanging from a doorknob is my favorite.  Here's an article I wrote with details on teaching this along with other tips for housetraining an adult dog:  http://www.azgreyhoundrescue.org/index.php/resources/articles/82-house-training-
