3yr old dog pees when i leave him

i have a 3 yr old mixed breed dog that i rescued from the kennels i work at 1 year ago. At the time i was living at my parents house and we had a dog that got along well with "Benjie".My parents house had a doggie door that he could use very well.  I recently moved into an apartment which doesnt have a doggie door so i am training him from the start. He has done very well with this but when i leave to go to work or just down the road a second he pees in the house, on the walls and furniture. i know hes potty trained, he never has accidents over night just when i leave him along. Ive had to gate off my living room, which is the only room with carpet. i dont know how to get him to stop peeing..any ideas?

Your dog may be marking his new surroundings.  There may have been other pets there before him, and dogs have a very keen sense of smell.  Here are 2 articles which may help.  Good luck!
