My neglected Chihuahua

Question
I just adopted a Chihuahua that is turning 2 year old in September or October. Her name is Tia. But heres my problem: her past owner neglected her and left her in a crate all day everyday. When she is near a crate that is open she runs to it trying to get in. When she gets in she won't come out even if I call her when the door is open. She seems also like she doesn't understand that I'm her owner, how do I get her to trust me more?

Answer
I would have the crate in family areas, and if she wants to be in it at this point, I would let her. With the door open. At the moment, it's the only "safe" thing she knows. Speak to her in gentle tones, and toss tasty treats near the crate. Ignore her if she comes out to get it. I know you want to bond with her but right now I would not press her to do anything. You can't force trust and sometimes it is a long time coming. I have a friend who had a dog much like you describe your little one, except hers is a big dog. It took several months for the dog to want to come out of her crate, longer for her to trust, and after a year and a half, she's starting to show her funny, social side. It's an uphill battle, but it's better to let the dog make the moves so you don't overwhelm her. And don't dwell on her past, sometimes the sympathy people have for their dog's unfortunate previous life just keeps those issues in the present. Good luck with her. Just take things slowly and she will come around. Sandy Case MEd, CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
