My Dogs new sleeping situation

Question

Hello, I have a 2 year old part Red Lab, part Brittany Spaniel dog. We have had
him since he was 8 weeks old, and he and our other dog, a Springer Spaniel
(he is 4 years old) have always slept in our bed at night. As you can imagine,
the sleeping situation is crowded, and  I am tired of changing the sheets
every day. I decided that enough was enough. We put a baby gate up at the
door of our room and the dogs bed on the other side of the gate. We leave
the door open. The springer has taken to the situation fine, but the younger
mixed breed dog has taken to pooping in our kitchen and chewing my son's
toys in protest. Just as a note, we do have to Kennel him when we leave the
house because he chews when we are not home, but we have never had a
problem with leaving him out at night until now. I know that this is a difficult
change for him. Can you please give me some tips to make this transition
easier? Letting them back in the bedroom is not an option. Thank you,

Answer
Hi, Danielle,

Is there any reason why you could not kennel him at night as well?

My feeling is that people generally do not utilize the dog crate to its fullest potential.  Of course, we need to always keep it a positive place for the dog, not use it as punishment.  Perhaps at night, use one of the Kong toys for just his nighttime crate toy.  One suggestion is to soften some of his food in water, stuff the Kong, freeze it; that way it will keep him busy for a long, long time.  You may also want to do something like this during his daytime stays.
