digging dog

My 6 month old shih tzu is digging in our back yard. we have a nice yard but an area that is not landscaped yet (will be soon now that spring will allow us to plant our perennials). Our 4 year old shih tzu does not dig and never did. What can we do to stop this? Will he grow out of it or need to be "trained" out of it? Our back yard is fenced in and we would like to be able to let the dogs out without baby sitting the young one.

How long do you leave him out there? Sounds to me like he's bored. Digging is one of the most common things dogs do when they're bored. Try bringing him back in with you sooner. To discourage him digging in the same spots over and over, put his feces in the holes and cover them back up with dirt.
