Bulldog Follow-up

Question
Thank you for quick response to my problem.  I have a few follow questions regarding your advice.

Regarding the tray-  She has peed a couple of nights and days in a row and everytime following that I have give her bath. Bulldogs have problems with there skin and over bathing can exacerbate them.

Moving the crate into my bedroom-  I was thinking the pee could be due to separtion anxiety and keeping the crate in my living room I thought will help her gain her independence.

Her water-I always take it away by 8

Do you still think I should remove the grate and move the crate into my bedroom?

Answer
Hi again, Cris. I do not believe that she is peeing in her crate at night because of separation anxiety. If this was the case, then she'd do it during the day when you left as well (and you made no mention of that). Whether you decide to move her crate into your bedroom or not, you may want to try setting your alarm to wake you up mid-way through the night to take her out and see if she will 'go.' If she's already peed in her crate at that point, then set the alarm a little earlier (30min to an hour) and repeat until you have figured out when it is exactly that she is 'going' in the crate. Once you have figured that out, you can start setting your alarm to get you up 15 minutes beforehand and take her out to potty. Do this for a week, then start gradually adding back time, until she is going all the way through the night without going potty in her crate.

If the crate is in your bedroom, you may not >>need<< the alarm because she may wake you up when she needs to go, either by simply moving around in the crate, or she may whine or scratch at the door. That was the only reason I said to move the crate into your bedroom - so you could hear her.

If she pees in her crate and gets it on her, all you really need to do is rinse her off with warm water. There is no need to use shampoo, which is what can exacerbate skin issues by stripping the skin and coat of oils. Simply rinsing her off well, with warm water isn't going to hurt her one bit. ;^)

It's good that you are picking up her water by 8:00pm. Keep doing that. When/What do you feed her? Perhaps a change in her feeding routine might help as well.
