New Baby - Help!

Question
I have 2 dogs. They are form the same litter, both going to be 8 in Nov. They
are both VERY well trained. We have a big yard that is fenced in and until
recently would leave them to play outside while I am at work. I had a baby in
May and both of them seemed to be doing ok, they didn't act out or anything.
Over the past month though they have started to be destructive. They both
ripped thru screens to jump outside. They dig holes under the fence and
escaped while we were out and now we leave them in the dining room w/ the
door shut and they tip there water over. One dog has a little separation
anxiety but I thought with being home all summer she would be better... I
even bring them to my Mother's when I drop off the baby so they won't be
alone when I'm gone. Both places have big yards they can run around in, but
they only wanna be next to me.  I trust them with the baby - but I can't leave
them alone anymore without them destroying something, and I just don't
know what to do anymore. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks

Answer
Actually, you being home all summer may have made things worse, not better.  The dog got used to you being there, and it's twice as problematic now that you're not.  Add to that the problem of litter mates, which means that, in general, they may rely more on one another than on you, and it's easy to see how one dog can mimic the destructive behavior of the other.  It could be that they are not getting enough exercise, or mental stimulation.  Or, the baby's cries may make them anxious.  Hard to say what's really causing this, but my advice would be to contact a professional to assess the situation, since you are dealing with two dogs, one of which may be instigating the other.  This is probably something you can solve, but you need guidance on a personal level.  The Animal Behavior Society or IAABC have listings on their web sites.
