Question
Hi,
We have a wonderful Husky/Lab cross. She's 6 months old and we crate-trained her from about 2 months with great success. So much so that she can stay out of her crate all night while we sleep without any issue or concern, likewise, extended periods throughout the day. However, over the last 3 weeks she has been peeing on the carpet where normally she would wait to go out in the morning. This would occur every 2nd or 3rd day. We had her spayed last week and now we find she is eliminating every night, regardless of whether we walk her at night and get up at 2am to take her out. This morning I took her out, she eliminated, went back inside and 10mins later did it all over again on the carpet. It seems that she's trying to prove a point. We are active people and I'm thinking that she's annoyed at us for taking it easy while she heals from her spaying, but that doesn't explain the weeks prior to her operation. We are going to go back to crate-training for her at night but I was hoping to get some insight into this behaviour.  She's a smart dog with very much a Lab temperament and Husky physique and quite the huge need for affection....and she gets it.
Any suggestion would help and thanks for taking the time to read my concern.

Cheers
Ed

Answer
Your dog might have had a low grade urinary tract infection that got worse, or she might even have become "spay incontinent" (if that's the case, there are medications that can help).
Speak to your vet first about the changes in her behavior, but if he/she rules out a physical cause, then it could be that anxiety is playing a part in this.  Go back to basic house training, but use *no* punishment - instead, crate her when you can't watch her, and watch her like a hawk when she's out of her crate.  Dogs are not in the habit of urinating to prove a point, even though it often seems to humans that they are.  That is just not part of what they "get".
