Question
QUESTION: i have a female miniature pincher who just recently started barking at every person in, or around my house. Its uncontrollable, she will bark at every noise that sounds like someone is entering the house or even if she hears something near the house that might be to close. no matter what i do she wont stop.
when she starts barking, it can last for an extremely long time. she will only stop when they are gone or pick her up and introduce themselves.
an example : i had a cable guy in my house yesterday she started barking at him the moment he pulled into the driveway and didn't stop until he left almost an hour later she became focused on him that nothing else seamed to matter
what do i do ???????
ANSWER: What you're describing is pretty much a breed trait, James. Could you tell me what all you have tried to try and get her to stop? That will give me a jumping off point for suggestions.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: well i tried waving a treat in front of her to get her to stop, while saying quiet. after she is quiet for a few seconds i give her the treat and praise her. the problem with that is sometimes she just ignores the treat or toy or whatever i have to distract her and other times she takes it and just starts barking again immediately

Answer
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, James. So you've tried the distraction approach already. What about squirting her with a squirt bottle filled with water and set to the 'stream' setting? If you haven't tried that, do. Try to keep the bottle hidden so she doesn't know where the stream of water is coming from. Otherwise, she'll soon figure out that if you're not holding the bottle, she can bark all she wants without getting squirted!

Another thing would be to use a leash and collar to physically correct her after you've given the 'quiet' command and she continues to bark.
