why does my dog howl, cry, & dig at the door at night...
he is sometimes up stairs with us at night but sometimes we dont and when we dont he goes mad!!!

There is not really enough info here.  However, it sounds as if he has not learnt to be left alone and finds it hard when he is sometimes allowed upstairs and sometimes not - thats a bit confusing for him.

why not let him remain upstairs with you every night?  Failing that, you need to teach him gradually to accept being left alone, and ensure he has a comfy bed to sleep on.  Don't just leave him panicking though as he may injure himself - make sure you help him get used to it slowly.
