Training to pee outside (vs. on paper in house!)

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
I just got a cavalier king charles pup this week and he is now 14 weeks old. He is a good pup, but he was trained to go potty inside on paper and he WILL NOT go outside. I have tried taking the paper outside and taking him to the same spot but he just holds it until he gets inside and then runs to paper (or another spot because I took the paper away) and goes pee or poop and then I dont know what to do, because he doesnt have to go potty anymore since he just did it on the floor. I have tried putting him back in his crate as soon as he comes inside if he didnt go outside so that he has NO chance to pee on the floor. Is this good? I just don't know how to get him to pee outside rather than inside, he is very stubborn about it and can hold is bladder for HOURS!! Help!
Thank you!

ANSWER: I'd supervise carefully - have him always in your view, and if he starts looking for a place to go, whisk him up and outside. You might even tether him to you. Be sure you go with him when he comes out of the crate - if he doesn't potty in five minutes, back in for five minutes and try again. Another possibility is use a litter box for a while (more like outside and less like rugs, etc) and then move the litter outside. Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com

QUESTION: Thank you for the advice. I have another question though: According to everything I read he should not be able to hold his bladder and bowel as long as he does (he's 14 weeks). He holds it for hours.. like up to 8 hours straight. The last time he went poo was around 2pm and he hasnt done anything since and it is now 10pm. Should I be concerned? Should I just let him go inside on paper? I dont want his bladder to explode! I thought that eventually he would have to go so bad that he would just do it outside when I gave him a chance?
Thank you!

Answer
The guidelines are written for everydog, and each dog is actually an individual, so may not follow the "rules" While it's unlikely his bladder will explode, it may stretch, and by holding for longer than normal, he may become more prone to certain health problems and infections. I'd really try the litter and then moving that to outside later. He sounds like he has been well-trained to papers and is trying his best to do what he's learned. You might also want to talk to your vet to make sure there isn't a physical element in his unusual potty habits.
