housebreaking and chewing

Question
My five month old male puppy is sort of housebroken, he holds it all night and barks when he needs to go out during the day.  But about every four or five days he will pee in the house right in front of us.  We use positive training when he does this we tell him no and outside outside while we are taking him out, then when he finishes outside we tell him what a good boy he is.  So why does he keep doing this?  Also he has chew toys, but will still chew on the furniture, not on wood but on the fabric of the couch and chairs and even on the rug, when we catch him doing this we tell him no and he stops, but only until he goes on to find the next thing to chew.  How can I change this behavior?

Answer
Hello, Janet!

Every time you catch puppy peeing in the house, make a loud clap or some quick noise to startle him and pick him up and put him outside - as you have been.  Be sure to thoroughly clean and neutralize any areas in the house he pees on with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water, so there is no residual scent to tempt him later.  Just be consistent - it may take some time.  With regard to the chewing, give him something acceptable to chew on and whenever you find him chewing on something he shouldn't, make a loud clap to distract him and give him the correct chew toy.  Praise him whenever you find him chewing on the correct toy.  Also, you may try a Kong or some sort of toy that you can stuff with treats to really entice him.  Good luck!
