Questionmy bassett hound will growl and go for me when i want to take something off of him ie toy or something he is chewing up,also sometimes when i touch him when he is cleaning himself,i have only had him for a week.
AnswerThis sounds like a behavior he learned before coming to live with you. It can also turn into a dangerous situation for you if not rectified properly. The very first thing I would do is put him on a "nothing in life is free" program. That is, he gets nothing unless he works for it-food, water, walks, going outside, petting.....nothing. Just something as simple as looking at you attentively or sitting can be the "work". You should also enroll in a basic obedience course. I would not look at trainers that exclusively use training collars, as they tend toward very aggressive, "because I said so" type of methods. This dog is new in your home-and for right now you mean nothing to him. Building a positive, respectful relationship is going to be the key to your success.
Explore my site in the training basics section. The focus exercises and being a pack leader especially. This should help you start that relationship with him.
