Question
I have a 16 week old black lab who pees at the drop of a dime.  We feed him in the morning and take him out to poop and pee.  By the time we get home he is so excited to see us he his peeing everywhere.  So I tried ignoring him and cutting down his cage size yet he continues to pee.

Answer
Hi Sonya,
This is called submissive urination and is quite common in puppies and often goes away on its own. But any behavior that is rehearsed can become a habit.

Avoid rushing to your puppy when you come home. Give your dog time to calm down, by managing him in a crate or behind a baby gate. When you approach, do it in a low-key way, with your body turned, so you're not confrontational. Kneel and avoid eye contact. Then take your dog outside to relieve himself.

Another good strategy is to throw a toy down the hallway when your puppy comes to you. This gives him something else to focus on. The main reason puppies have submissive urination is because of people looming over them, looking at them, touching them or talking to them. When he is chasing the toy he is focused on that instead of being the center of attention.

If you get mad at him for this, he will just become more anxious and it will probably get worse.
