Question
Hi. We have two dogs, my dog an Australian Terrior called Tess (3yrs), and my partners dog a Boxer named bella (7mths). We moved into a rental property a few months back, restrictions in the market meaning we got a house with less than ideal fencing. My partner is in the Navy and went to sea two months ago, and the day after he left Bella began jumping the fence (Only when nobody was at home). I ordered a radio collar which seemed to be working, only then the barking began (again, only when at home alone). Now it has gotten to a point where she will take the shock to get over the fence AND is barking at people up and down the street (friendly, but likely intimitating and certainly annoying for neighbours - also she is not so keen to be shocked to get back into the yard so is spending a concerning amount of time outside the yard). I'm at wits end - I have tried tying her up, but neighbours have complained about the constant barking, and tried leaving her in the shed during the day but she becomes anxious and makes an uncanny amount of mess and refused dinner. I've also tried supplying toys, and large bones - apparently not enough to keep her entertained!! Please help?! How do I keep her in the yard, quiet, but still happy?!

Answer
This is a common problem with electric fences. Dogs should never be put on a radio collar without also being boundary trained and any company that sells you one without including training in their package is ripping you off. Here is an excellent video that gives the basic idea of boundary training http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCuY9uX7ods

If you're not home, she should be indoors where it's safe. Kids can throw rocks at her, other dogs could jump in and get her or she could be stolen. It's just not safe to leave a dog outside unsupervised. If she has separation anxiety then that must be addressed as well. http://www.thegooddogjournal.com/2008/11/separation-anxiety.html
