Question
i have a 1 1/2 year old black lab,ive had him since he was old enough to take from the kennel where i bought him. at the beginning he had problems with peeing in his crate constantly,he was on pills for a urinary tract infection.after a couple of months of that things got better, so when he turned about a year old we started leaving him out of his cage at night, everything was good for a bit and then he went on a little spree of peeing in the house 2-3 times a week during the night. by nightime im saying hes out at 10 ish and were up at 5:30 ish and he has the kitchen covered and the hallway covered in urine.we clean everything with resolve, and mop and shampoo the rugs, but it continues.recently i decided to act as if he was a puppy again and only take him out on a leash and only every few hours to see if this will help.he was good for 2 weeks and last night he went all over again.i dont know if to much freedom by beeing outside all of the time got him to the point where he thinks he can go whenever he wants thats why i tried the leash thing again, basically to try and start over.another thing is even in the house he never lets us know when he has to go,he just gos its all a guessing game to us,any help would be appreciated.thanks

Answer
Nick,
Is your lab neutered?  If not, he could be marking.  This is common as the boys reach maturity.   Have you ruled out another urinary tract infection?   They can easily come back.

If neither of the above are applicable, I would use the crate consistantly for several months.  If you have a problem with him going in the house in front of you, I would keep him on a leash in the house so you have complete control.  If it is only when you can not supervise -- definitely use the crate.   Sometimes they just forget what is expected and need to be reminded.
