Question
hello anne. im trying to teach my 3 month old pug puppy to stay and come and i was wondering if it is ok to teach them both at the same time. for example, say stay and when i get far enough, tell my puppy to come. also, can you send me a link to a good website that has step by step insrtuctions on how to teach a puppy basic commands?

thanks a lot

Answer
No, I'd work on these two behaviors separately, and I would not call a novice dog out of a "stay".  Get the "stay" really cemented before you go to calling, or he will learn to anticipate that every time you put him in a stay he's going to have to "come" so he might as well get started early - then, you have a dog that repeatedly breaks the "stay".
The sites I like best are:
www.clickerlessons.com and www.clickertrainusa.com
But, any puppy needs puppy class or play groups to socialize OFF LEASH with other puppies, and they should be doing that BEFORE the age of 12-16 weeks, so you have no time to lose.
Google "puppy stages of development" to see why it's soooo important.
