Jumping on fence how to stop it

Question
Hello Lorie I need help with something I'm not sure how to correct...Haylie my labraodr retreiver has a tendency to go haywire when she sees a person walking through the alley behind our house or hears a dog in the distance, She goes "nuts" I call it... running at full speed through the yard and jumping with all her weight onto our fence, Calling her when shes doing this is pointless and the only way she will stop is to run out and grab her collar and drag her inside.... it got to the point she broke through the fence(it should be replaced but landlord wont do it) and I was called at work saying my jack russell terrier was gone and couldn't be found last summer...Haylie came back but Luke would not come when called and he was lost for 2 hours. She has also scraped her legs/paws and recently broke a toe nail requiring surgery to fix from jumping on the fence when my mother(who lets my dogs out when I'm at work) unchained her, Yes its so bad I now chain her for her safely as well as others.....who wouldn't be scared of a 85 pound dog trying to jump the fence? She also reinjured a tore ligament in her knee with her craziness and this must stop now shes driving me nuts...even on her chain she pulls and barks and nearly strangles herself when someone goes past the yard and pulling her in is a hassle in itself. With the yard being so big I would like to have her unchained so she can run and play with my two small terriers like she used to be able to....but being chained and running with the other dogs is impossible. I need to know what to do when she shows this behavior???(I figured on spending outdoor time with her unchained on the weekends and correct the behavior when it happens) I need to know what to do when someone passes the yard.....I get very nervous when someone passes for this reason...she almost scales the fence(she would Never bite anyone but likes to protect the yard).... Any advice on the matter would be extremely appreciated.

Answer
Tara,
My suggestion to you would be the can of pennies when she is jumping on the fence. Get an empty soda can ( you will need to duck tape the top) or empty water bottle (save top). Fill with about 16 pennies and close top, when she is out there barking or jumping on fence shake the can as you run towards her saying NO!!! the noise will startle her in stopping the action so you can correct her, once she stops praise her.
Some times the can of pennies is not enough of noise, so many clients step up to banking pot lids together, it's the unfamiliar noise you are looking for to stop her action.
This needs to be done very time she goes to the fence, if you do this faithfully for a few days you should have some results.
Take a weekend and set her up, have someone pass the fence so you can correct her.

Let me know how you are getting along with this

Lorie
