How often should a dog go out?

Question
I sometimes help with the neighbors dog and I am currently watching her. I'm not sure of her age but I was wondering how often she should go out. She seems to be constantly sniffing around like she has to go, but most of the time I bring her out and she starts pulling me back to the door. Any tips? Thanks!

Answer
Hello, Allison. If the dog is an adult, and is used to staying inside during the day, then minimum, I would let her out once in the morning and once in the evening, and then one more time right before bedtime. You didn't say what breed she was, but generally, an adult dog can hold it for up to 9 hours during the day.

Try taking her for a walk instead of just going out in the yard. Walking helps to stimulate the bladder & bowels, and that could help get her to stop trying to go back to the door.
