Question
Ok, my sheltie is 5 yrs old now and still can not get the hang of walking on a lead properly.  When I put her on the short lead leash she constantly pulls (and seems to strangle herself which worries me)she is constantly trying to lead me and then she darts out in front of me and last time she tripped me and I went flying and landed on my face!!!  Please help me so that we can enjoy our walks as exersise and fun all in one.  I am getting where I do not even enjoy taking her anymore cause it is such a struggle..please help me....

Answer
Hi there

All dogs need to be taught to walk on the lead - it does not come naturally (unfortunately!).  It is one of the trickier things we teach them, and requires persistence and patience.  She is not doing these things to you on purpose - she is just being a dog and trying to get to where you are going (probably the park).

Start off indoors - use treats which she really likes cut into tiny bits.  stand still with her on say, your left (pick a side and stick to it).  Don't move, just say 'heel' and reward her.  repeat then take a step forwards letting her follow a treat in your hand.  Say 'heel' again and give her the treat.  Gradually link more steps together, rewarding her for staying close to your side.  If she crosses over you just guide her back to the correct side.  The lead should never be tight, you want her to follow you because she is learning that is what you want (by the behaviour being rewarded).  Therefore, never have a short lead as you are making it harder for you both.  It will take a long time for her to walk on a loose lead when she is excited so for now just practice when she is calm and focused i.e. not on your way to walk but indoors, in the garden or on the way back from a run with her.

be consistent and time your rewards well.  Don't tell her off as it is not her fault she has never learnt to walk on a loose lead!

Good luck
